Especially those that operate in areas such as office buildings, parking garages, elevator shafts and any structures that are below grade. These stations are responsible for pumping wastewater from a low level to a higher one, where it can be stored and ultimately pumped out. 

In the case of a lift station, sewage from the building is directed into a pit as part of a septic system. Once the pit reaches a certain level, a float switch is triggered, signaling that the tank is full and needs to be emptied through a pressurized line to its next destination, typically uphill in the system.
